However, before you go on a ghost hunt, it may help to rethink what a ghost follower really is and what hidden value they may be quietly adding to your social media presence.

The term ghost follower is often thrown around with a negative spin. Ghost followers are described as accounts that do not like, comment, DM, or save your posts. These are often referred to as free loaders in the engagement economy.

Instead of thinking of ghost followers as a liability, what if you consider them low-key assets?

  • They reflect real-world behavior- The majority of social media users are consumers, not creators. They are not here to engage with every post- they may just want to browse, discover, or click on something. This does not make these followers useless- it makes them human! 

At the same time, there is no denying that there are low-quality followers as well. These are the inactive accounts, the spam bots, or fake profiles. These do not view, like, or care. They just exist!

These could be your acquaintances or even friends who do not like your posts but see everything. These could be recruiters looking at your work quietly, brand reps doing research for collaborations, or even people who are too shy to engage online. 

Also, let’s not forget that as these platforms mature, engagement metrics tend to drop naturally. There is more content and less time to peruse. That does not mean people are not interested; it just means they may be too overwhelmed.

  • Create content that drives people to stop scrolling. 
  • Engage in conversations- reply to comments, message your new followers. 
  • Engage strategically by commenting on accounts in your niche and get discovered. 
  • Use social media insights to see what is actually working. Monitor your reach, not just likes.
