Amid a sea of viral content and transient fame, a young girl from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, became a symbol of hope for many. She was not attracting attention by her act, but by her smiling face, to which the entire world was hooked. Her name was Bella Thomson(Bella‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Brave). She was recognized worldwide as Bella Brave.

Her remarkable history intertwines with extraordinary bravery, rare illnesses, infinite love, and a legacy that millions of hearts are deeply touched by even after her death.

Who Was Bella Brave? The Girl Behind the TikTok Sensation

Bella Thomson came into this world with three extremely rare medical conditions. That could have severely affected the spirit of even a grown-up, let alone a child. She was suffering from severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). A condition where the immune system is practically absent.

Nevertheless, Bella’s main trait was being rich. Her touchstone joy was not her illness.

How Bella Brave Went Viral on TikTok

Things were going unnoticed until that fateful summer day when Bella and her mom, Kyla Thomson, uploaded their first TikTok post. They initially only performed dances, sang and laughed together, bringing a ray of sunshine into their hospital days. In 2021, a video of Bella sketching a fox for a short story drew the internet’s attention. And from that moment on, everything was different.

Before long, the Bella Brave TikTok account had surpassed 7 million followers, and the combined likes had exceeded 257 million. TikTok officially named her one of its Breakthrough Stars of 2023. Celebrity singer Halsey became a fan and sent Bella a present of art supplies. Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds visited her in hospital. The world had its eyes on her and was rooting for this little girl with an enormous spirit.

The Life-Saving Bowel Transplant: Three Years of Waiting

Bella had been placing her hope on the transplant list at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto for three years before a bowel donor match came. The phone rang, and the news was delivered in August 2023 that the long wait was finally over.

Little Bella was not only granted a life-saving bowel transplant, but also she recuperated quicker than any child who had such an operation had been known to do. In just a few weeks, she was consuming solid food again and able to walk. The words of her mom, Kyla, were blunt: “With new bowels, she can make it.”

Bella Brave’s Passing: A World Mourns

In May 2024, Bella began experiencing unusual breathing difficulties. Doctors at SickKids eventually identified the cause as Organised Pneumonia, a complication so rare that her own specialists had never encountered it in a post-transplant patient. The combination of a prior bone marrow transplant and her bowel transplant created a medical situation without precedent.

Bella Thomson, Bella Brave, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, at 4:19 PM ET, in the arms of her parents. She was 10 years old.

The Legacy of Bella Brave: Bravery That Lives On

The death of Bella shocked her worldwide community of followers BRAVEling, but it did not end her influence. Her mother, Kyla, has continued the legacy of Bella’s advocacy and beyond, focusing on grief counselling for bereaved parents in Saskatchewan. She has released the Beyond Brave podcast to continue spreading Bella’s spirit.
